There's two parts to today's essay - 1) letting go of loved ones, family members, children, and friends, and 2) not matching the majority, collective, or group.
First off, it's important to realize that we are all Spirit (Infinite, Expanded). That means we're bigger than our stories, our personalities, our bodies, and our individual lifetime. An infant is as capable at creating it's reality as an adult. Before we are born, we create our basic story plot, including our parents, our birth circumstances, and our childhood.
I no longer believe that life is a school in that there aren't specific lessons for us to learn. We're Infinite; we ARE the 'Cosmic Internet'. Life is a road trip to be enjoyed. *And* there's always fun experiences with inhabiting into a body and navigating through the density & effort of a physical plane.
We are ALL infinite Beings. Including your children. *They* created their basic story plot, including *you* are their parent(s), their birth circumstances and their childhood. Your body may have manufactured (or contributed to manufacturing) their body, you may have given them rudimentary driving lessons, but ultimately, the keys are theirs and their choices of routes and stops along the way is entirely their own.
My firstborn was a home birth that ended up being helicoptered to intensive care for the first week of his life. It should have given me a clue that he was going to go a 'scenic route' through life that I would not have planned for him. In stepping back, letting go of his itinerary (which I had no power in creating, as much as I'd like to blame or take credit for), he's been able to achieve things I could never have imagined. And experienced heartache I would have given anything to avoid.
My youngest is in Morocco with his college group as I write this. It did not help that I followed #Morocco on Twitter and got every on-the-street video of protesters being beaten up in Casablanca and a couple other cities. For one thing, he was in Tangiers on the other side of the country. And I suspect he had a wonderful time completely oblivious to any political rumblings going on. He is orchestrating *his* scenic route through life in a more creative way that I could have written for him.
We have to let go of others to their own creations. They are not powerless, they are not victims, and other ones are not evil or bad. We are all Infinite Beings making up our own storylines for the challenge and the fun of it. When you can shift to that perspective you can be amused (Spirit is always amused, it doesn't take anything in this playground seriously), and you can appreciate how capable everyone is.
This includes letting them go to experience joy and happiness, as well as pain and despair.
This includes letting them go to live, or to die. As Spirit, there is no death. It's just getting out of the pool when swim time is over. The only part that is gone is the body, and that's a very small portion of Who anyone is. You can still talk to people without their body, they're just harder to hear (until you develop your ability to communicate with them). As Spirit there are no ethics about how long to inhabit a body, either. Sometimes a few months in utero is all that's needed. It's not how long a life is lived that matters, it's how full (to paraphrase Seneca).
The second part of this is not matching the group or collective. You can be in an area that experiences a massive disaster, and have a different experience within it. On 9/11 there were countless numbers of people who were supposed to be in the Twin Towers or on those ill-fated airplanes that missed their flight or had their meeting canceled, or woke up with the flu. They did not join the group(s) in that creation. Joan Borysenko's neighborhood in Colorado had a wildfire burn through, and her house was left standing.
In terms of spiritual or personal growth, we often have to let go of the group because, instead of allowing for expansion, they're encouraging limitation. Family members get stuck in perpetuating patterns of dysfunction or abuse, but we don't have to play with them! It's okay not to be related to your relatives. Lola Jones says 'spiritual practices are meant to be outgrown', sometimes spiritual groups, churches and belief systems need to be left behind as well.
This is also helpful in terms of the economy; you can experience prosperity in a 'down market'. You can get a job amidst the sea of unemployed, because your energy is brighter and stands out.
On the other hand, going through tough times or emergencies can bring out the best in people. It's an opportunity to grow deeper, emotionally. It's a chance to open hearts and hands to each other. In which case, your experience is less painful, you have less suffering, because you are in the bigger awareness of it.
Just some things to keep in mind during these exciting times!

Where is your nose?
©2011 Joan M. Newcomb
It's been an intense time for many people. We are collectively going through an Emergence. You can see it as our Consciousness vibration raising, or a deeper integration with our Expanded Selves.
What doesn't match this higher vibration is becoming unbearable. It is showing up differently in each of our lives. For some it is long-term relationships with friends or family as we've outgrown the patterns we used to share. For some it is their career, either feeling stuck in their job, or being laid off and unable to find another in their industry (because in reality their work is not in integrity with their Purpose). And around the globe you can see governments breaking down that are stuck in old, restrictive patterns.
There's a lot going on to distract you from your own growth.
Even if you're part of a group that is in a similar expansion - say you're among the unemployed, or you live in Egypt - you still have your own unique process. The group can be supportive, if it's moving forward or raising vibration. It can be limiting if it's representing stuckness.
It can be confusing to know what is your own information and energy amongst everyone else. Here's some clues -
Your own emotions feel clear to you. If it's your anger, it feels clear and pure. If you're joyous or happy, you're on the right path, connected with Source.
If you feel distorted, disconnected, highly dramatic or confused, you're energy is mingling with others or bumping up against external restrictions.
Energetically, there's some techniques for maintaining separation when in groups or in collective situations. Have the sense of 'owning your space', your energy bubble or aura. Just a sense of ownership can define your awareness from other's reality. You can also imagine being a 'half step above' other's vibratory levels. A fun way to do this is to imagine your aura is a different color than everyone else. (Teenagers with their IPods do this musically).
It's also helpful to know what is your business and what's not. What goes on in someone else's life is none of your business - even if you're a spouse or sibling or child. They're Infinite Beings, capable of creating their own reality. They have their own connection to Source. They have their own Guardian Angels. (This is great for dealing with ex-relationships and for young adult children. They get to have the consequences of their own actions, too).
Figure out, where is your nose? If your nose is into someone else's life, you get to experience their craziness, too. Does that benefit you? Does it help you resolve your own issues? Is it moving you forward on your path? Notice where your nose is, and turn it towards your own life.
When you're driving, you have a tendency to steer where you're looking. If you're looking towards the dark side of things, you're steering yourself there. If you're looking at your neighbor's life, you're steering into their lane. Look in the direction where you are going, you'll avoid any potholes in the road ahead.
So, this week notice if you're feeling clear or crazy. Notice if you're thinking about solutions to your own issues or about other people's Stuff. If you keep your eye on the destination you desire, you're more likely to end up there!

Harmonize for Holiday Harmony!
(c) 2009 Joan M. Newcomb
Last Monday was our island's annual Christmas sing-a-long at our local movie theatre. It's very hokey- a small town affair. Having lived here nearly 25 years, I have lots of lovely (& uncomfortable) memories of these sing-a-longs.
My earliest is my son Graham at 4 or 5, wearing his cowboy boots (which he lived in during those years) and Santa hat (which remained glued to his head from Thanksgiving through New Years) and running/dancing up and down the theatre aisles while everyone sang. He's now a 6'4" freshman at Vassar!
My most recent is last year, sitting by myself in a nearly empty theatre, my heart full of loneliness and pain. A blizzard had snowed us all in, my husband was stranded at his mother's in Bellevue and my kids at their dad's miles away, and I was alone the full seven days up to Christmas morning. I'd hiked 2 miles into town to participate in the caroling.
This year was totally different, the place was packed and my husband was by my side. That in itself was a Christmas miracle; he's a devout Buddhist and doesn't like to sing!
While we were singing, I had a revelation which I'd like to share with you - something that may make it easier to get through the rest of the holidays (and life)!
I like to sing alto. When I was 6 or 7 I joined our school choir and learned the harmonies to all the Christmas songs. What I felt was, that it was okay to be different. I was the only American in class (we moved to England when I was 5). I'm the only girl in my family (3 brothers). Learning to harmonize, you learn to sing a different tune than others are singing. You keep your musical line while others are singing the melody. Energetically what this means is you hold your own vibration at a different level than others.
In a group, however, you're matching the music of others in your section, so you do have the strength/power of all the other altos (basses, tenors, sopranos, etc.) to match. Alone, you learn to hold your own when others are singing the prevalent tune.
By the time I left high school, I'd sung in school choirs in four countries. I learned to adapt to different cultures, make friends quickly, yet be ready to let go when my dad was stationed somewhere else.
What does this have to do with Harmonizing for Holiday Harmony? Well, I've been writing about how to stay sane when visiting your (dysfunctional) family members. Someone recently asked me how to stay serene around friends who are frenzied about Christmas. And the answer is the same -
Set the vibration you want to be at, whether it's serenity or joy or peace. Hold your own vibration where ever you are. It's okay for you to be in a different space while others are going wiggy.
How do you do this? I've several suggestions. Imagine yourself in a bubble of gold - your own private Christmas ball. Or pink. Or blue. Whatever symbolizes to you the vibration of what you want to experience. Have an emotional touchstone. Does a particular Christmas tune or sound set it for you? Does humming jingle bells awaken your inner child who still believes in Santa? Does the image of Mary invoke her serene demeanor within you?
Before getting together with others, take a moment to use one of the above techniques (or one you've made up) to 'set your own tone'. And let yourself hold it while you're with them. It's okay for them to be emanating strident Yoko Ono sounds while you're humming the Little Drummer boy. It's okay for them to be playing Flight of the Bumble Bee while you're ohming your way to serenity. It's okay for their auras to be flaming red while you are fir tree green.
It's okay for you to have sanity in your head regardless of others' experience. It's okay for you to be happy while they're sad. Actually, it's okay for you to be sad while they're manically happy. You can breathe and be real and you don't have to match anyone else.
Try this for the next week and see what happens! And let me know! Joan@JoanNewcomb.com

Body 101: Emotions
©2008 Joan M. Newcomb
With all the fun and games going on in the news nowadays, I thought it would be helpful to revisit a basic topic in the Human Game playbook.
Emotions are body-level communications. As Essence, or Spirit, you are eternally joyful, nothing phases you, and even the most dire circumstances seem mildly amusing to you.
Your physical body communicates to You with it's emotions. Like a little baby that cries when it's sad or needs to be changed, your body is continually sending you messages in order for You to take care of it.
When we start upon a spiritually focused path, we think we need to ignore the body or discount the emotions it produces. Which is the opposite of why we as Spirit (or Essence) chose to be here in the first place.
We're here to experience all the wonderful highs and lows of living in this world, including the body's emotions. Even if we're miserable, the higher part of us is ecstatic (perhaps even more so, because It's sensing *really* low vibrations, so delightfully opposite of Itself)!
Ignoring the body puts it into resistance with us, it will balk at taking us where we want to go, and even get sick (although there's a lot of reasons for getting sick, which is a topic for another ezine).
It's really the personality aspect of us that has ethics about emotions. It's the part that says that it's only okay to have 'good' emotions, and not okay to have 'bad' ones. Not allowing *all* emotions is like not allowing yourself to use all your words. It's okay to use adjectives but not okay to use verbs. Repressing certain emotions pretty much guarantees they'll either seep out in another form, or volcanically explode some time. Letting feelings flow as they come up lessens the intensity of the ones you're usually uncomfortable with.
Being empathic, I'll notice other people's emotions within my body space, although I may not know they're someone else's at first. I can sense when family members are cranky or sad or even hungry! It can be confusing because the intensity of the transmission doesn't depend on their physical proximity. Anyone who's cared for a colicky infant knows how overwhelming it can be when blasted by another's emotions. It feels the same psychically even if the 'blaster' is an adult!
Here are some suggestions for Body-Emotion management:
Not resisting the overwhelming feelings is helpful, although sometimes it's a fine line between not resisting them and being swamped by them. Also, allowing your own feelings is different than letting your emotions drive your car. You can have your feelings without being your feelings. They can inform you that you need to take care of yourself in some way, but you needn't succumb to road rage!
It's helpful to be aware that body takes things very seriously and views things in black and white. At the core of body's considerations is it's own survival, since it's not going to make it out of this lifetime alive! Spirit or Essence is immortal and thus has bemused detachment about such things.
Keeping focused in the present moment is reassuring to your body. Too far in the future creates anxiety, too far in the past creates depression, as the body only operates right here and now. In highly stressful situations, take it one moment at a time, because moment-to-moment, everything is okay.
Focus on extreme self-care. Besides the basics of enough sleep, good food, enough exercise, make sure to treat your body as the adorable and precious asset it is to you. Give it bubble baths, massages, chocolate or whatever else delights it and makes it feel special. You can coax your body through tough times this way.
And, finally, focusing only on *your* reality is helpful, too, since you can't control or change someone else's. They're capable and immortal beings, as well, and are (as Essence) really enjoying their dilemma. Don't match the group and you'll be just fine.

Divorce the Economy!
©2008 Joan M. Newcomb
Last Fall I was at a Mark Dunn seminar in Portland (for more info about him, go to www.drmarkdunn.com) and someone asked him about money. His response was, "you have to divorce the economy"!
What he meant was, you have to separate yourself energetically from not only the economy, but the collective mindset about money. One first step is to stop paying attention to the news.
The news is designed to elicit the most dramatic emotional response possible. It has to be about doom and gloom, as something positive just wouldn't be considered "news". An example of this is watching news reports about the weather.
The weather is an entertaining topic here in the Seattle area. We're in a convergence zone which means it can be snowing in parts of the city and bright and sunny in other parts. You can bet which part they'll be showing on the news that day! Their camera crews have to be quick however; most of our snowfall melts by mid-afternoon.
One person interviewed on a news show in New York can affect the entire country, even if he's only reflecting what's going on in that city.
In order to create a different reality for yourself, you have to stop focusing on the reality of others. Pull your attention away from the collective (who are operating unconsciously) and put it on yourself. Stop acting like it's snowing if it isn't at your house. Stop acting like you've entered the next Ice Age if it's going to melt by dinner. You cannot create something different if you're matching the group.
Better yet, notice how the sun is shining in your life. Wealth, riches, prosperity and abundance may be all around you, and you've had your face glued to CNN. In every moment there's opportunity to change your experience.
The other day one of my students was riding her bike and worrying about the economy. She found herself turning to her Expanded Self for guidance and suddenly noticed deer feeding in the field across the road. It was like a giant message that there is more to this Creation than the stock market numbers.
When you focus on doom and gloom, you close the doors to better possibilities. When you see the beautiful fall colors and savor the wind on your face, you open yourself to more gifts from the Universe.
As a reverse example - I've had times of money struggles as a single parent; there was one year when I couldn't afford toilet paper! All around me the economy was booming, but I was on food stamps. I experienced amazing miracles that year. One was a trip to Findhorn that cost less that $500 (including airfare); money for it appeared from unexpected refunds and rebates. Someone gifted me and my children firewood for the winter. We lived in a humble cabin, but it was on the beach next to million dollar homes. The energy of the water was tremendously healing for us.
The important thing I learned from that time was that, even though my income was low, I didn't have to be in a low energy space. Being on food stamps was temporary; I didn't need to experience the energetic state of welfare or poverty.
Collective energy is created by groups, but you can change the collective by changing your individual experience. If enough people focus on the light within their own lives, it enlightens the whole. Refuse to have your personal reality defined by Wall Street. Pay attention to the messages from your Expanded Self; it is always directing you towards the light.

Matching Energy
Matching Energy©2008 by Joan M. Newcomb
What is energy? Everything is energy - physical energy in dense, can be touched and seen, emotional energy is a higher vibration and can be felt, and spiritual energy is the lightest, most diffuse energy that can be intuitively experienced. Energy is an inner vibration and an outer atmosphere that colors our perceptions and contributes to our choices and actions.
I've noticed that people have a tendency to experience similar realities when they're together. There's a group energy. People experience it within families, when they're out with friends, at work, in school, in community gatherings, etc. It can go beyond just our immediate contacts when we expose ourselves to the news. This is called "matching energy" - matching the prevalent vibratory level emitted by the group.
The advantage of 'matching energy' with a group is that you can experience accelerated growth. When you're in a class, you experience accelerated education. When you're with a Church or other similarly focused community you can experience rapid spiritual evolvement. People who've been married for many years start to look alike, because they've 'matched energy' for so long. When you're in love, your heart opens as you and your beloved 'match energy'. Families matching energy can provide security and a safe place to grow.
The disadvantage of 'matching energy' is that the group can hold you back, to keep you at their level. I call it 'crabs in a bucket' syndrome. When you catch one crab and put it in a bucket, it will crawl out. But if you catch two crabs, they'll keep themselves in the bucket by pulling each other down as they try to climb out. When you listen to the news, you expose yourself only to the version of events the newscaster is putting out, which limits your ability to create a different reality. If you're an unemployed tech worker listening to the news you're going to feel that your only option is to work for McDonald's because the country is experience such a severe shortage of jobs! Matching energy this way depresses you, and drains your energy.
How do you *not* match energy? The first thing to do is not resist the prevalent reality. Let others be who they are, experiencing life the way they choose. You can detach from dysfunctional group situations - you may love the individuals but you do not have to be affected by the energy they project. The next thing to do is choose a different focus - turn off the news, or just read select parts of the newspaper. Choose comedies instead of disaster movies. Give less time and attention to those groups that hold you back. Give yourself permission to create differently than your associates.
The world is full of possibilities. Change can come in the blink of an eye. I believe we are all here to learn about creating and that we have the Free Will to manifest whatever we desire. We begin by manifesting thoughts, which go out into the Universe and begin to become physical form. The more we consistently think specific thoughts (whether consciously or unconsciously) the more energy we generate to come back to us on a physical level. Give yourself permission to 'think big', think outside whatever group you're in, and see what exciting things begin to happen!
